Strengthening Communities Through Family Learning

"LAPS is where I got my start on the first real day of my life. LAPS has helped me so much. It teaches people like me the importance of not giving up. LAPS has also showed me how to read to my child and to teach her to feel good about who she is. It's a wonderful and important program for all involved."

Our dream for Canada

Envision a Canada where every man, woman and child reaches their potential, where every parent gets the help he or she needs, where there are no barriers to learning. This is the Canada we are working to build. We truly believe that education is the great equalizer and that the desire to learn is a powerfully motivating force. If we, as community members, can support someone's desire to learn we are giving that person the opportunity to change his or her life.

Further Education Society

Established in 1996, the Further Education Society of Alberta (FESA) is a registered charitable organization whose vision is to provide lifelong learning opportunities to those who seek educational development and training.

FESA’s programs target multi-barriered learners from a variety of backgrounds. With the assistance of community partners, FESA is able to reach these individuals through offering free, locally-based educational programs. In addition, FESA’s programs are custom designed to meet the needs of different participants. They are competency based (build on existing strengths), as well as culturally sensitive and cross-cultural.

The objectives are to build new skills, increase confidence and provide incentives for participants to continue on the path of life-long learning.

FESA is involved in a wide range of initiatives such as designing family literacy programs and curriculum, developing training materials and delivering workshops, and researching solutions that build community capacity by addressing language and literacy challenges.
