What we do
The three arms of FESA
Our organization's goal is two-fold: to continue to promote literacy in Canadian Society and to enhance parenting skills, so that every person in Canada can reach his or her full potential. To achieve this goal we have streamlined our efforts into three key areas: programming, research, and training and leadership.
In cooperation with grassroots community agencies, we respond to the learning needs of high-risk groups. These groups include but are not limited to people who are: aboriginal, unemployed, undereducated, learning disabled, young, teen or single parents, victims of abuse or abusers, immigrants, socially isolated, drug and alcohol abusers.
Our mission
All FESA personnel will work together and with community partners locally and nationally to provide services for multi-barriered and isolated learners. These services will be respectful of learners' learning styles and cultural needs, literacy and parenting needs, and which encourage their children's language and literacy development so that all may achieve their emotional, spiritual, physical and mental capacity.
Local programming
Our programs are free and provided through the Calgary Community Family Literacy Program (CCFLP). The programs come highly recommended by past participants because they are designed so that they are relevant to their experiences. Most of the programs that we offer are the result of our own research and curriculum design that is ongoing. For more information on any of the programs listed, click on the program name or Contact Us. You can also visit our Programs page.
Research
Approximately 42% of Canadians have problems dealing with printed materials according to Statistics Canada. Our research has led us to develop programs and curriculums that target the specific needs of participants in their daily lives. Research is the backbone of our organization and the reason for our success.
Since 1996, FESA has produced groundbreaking material specifically regarding family literacy. Many programs in Canada focus on workplace/occupational literacy. Our family literacy programs are designed to break the intergenerational cycle of low literacy skills and through that help the children of low literate parents as well. We have made this material available nationally for educators, facilitators and community agencies. For more information on the research projects listed below or to order any of the material, click on the project name, visit our Research page or Contact Us.
Training & leadership
Facilitators and trainers work all across Canada so that FESA's reach is truly nation wide. These training programs also help us to fulfill our goal of spreading awareness about the value of family literacy in Canada and building community literacy resources.
