ABOUT
LIL
Introduction
Literacy for Independent Living
(LIL) is an online project of the Canadian Association of Independent Living
Centres (CAILC). Its original name was "Making Connections: A Two-year,
Comprehensive Cross-Disability Literacy Issues Strategy". LIL is housed at
CAILC's web site.
CAILC is a national umbrella
organization with 26 Member Centres run by and for persons with a wide variety
of disabilities. CAILC is very concerned that Canadians with disabilities have
"alarming rates of low literacy". This reality led us to develop the Literacy
for Independent Living (LIL) web site in partnership with the
National Adult Literacy
Database (NALD).
LIL provides online tools and
resources on literacy and disability issues so that disability and literacy
communities can share and learn from each other. Our goal is that LIL's online
resources will enable more adult learners with disabilities to access literacy
programs in their communities.
- If you are a literacy
practitioner, LIL has information for you on disability awareness, assistive
devices, best practices, tools, and many other topics that will facilitate the
literacy process for adult learners with disabilities.
- If you work in an Independent
Living Resource Centre or for any organization working with people with
disabilities, LIL has information on a range of literacy issues that will
assist adult learners with disabilities to access literacy programs in their
communities.
The ABOUT LIL section provides useful
background information and tips for literacy practitioners and for facilitators
at disability and community organizations who work with adult learners with
disabilities.
