There are thousands of literacy
programs and organizations across Canada. Find out where your local literacy
programs are located.
-
Literacy programs are run as
non-profit organizations with limited budgets. Many of their tutors are
dedicated volunteers who may have limited knowledge of disability issues.
-
See yourself as the "expert" on
disability issues and respect the expertise of literacy practitioners on
literacy issues. Offer your support and advice on disability awareness,
accommodation and assistive device issues
-
If the opportunity arises, get involved in any local literacy activities
through membership on literacy committees, networks or coalitions.
-
Please inform us at
CAILC if you find any useful resources or
sites that we do not currently have on LIL.
-
Please inform us if your
Independent Living Resource Centre (ILRC) or organization is undertaking a
literacy and disability project and we will post your information on this
site.
-
There are numerous gaps in
service. If your ILRC or organization is able to support more persons with
disabilities to access literacy programming in your community, then you will
have made a valuable contribution to narrowing these gaps.
