About Us

The Bayshore Adult Literacy Council is a non-profit volunteer organization which provides free reading, writing and numeracy skills training to adult learners.

In existence since 1992, Council volunteers have tutored numerous individuals in comfortable home environments throughout the Trinity - Conception region ( Georgetown - Bay-de -Verde - Blaketown )

The identity of our learners is kept entirely confidential and made known only to our student - tutor coordinator and a personal tutor assigned to the learner. Availability of tutorial sessions is arranged between the tutor and the learner, with books provided free of charge and new learning materials presented to the learner as he / she advances at a self pace. Certificates are awarded at each level.

The ability to read and write is a basic human need in our current society, and the Bayshore Adult Literacy Council exists to help people to help themselves function to their highest potential.

If you know of an individual who can avail of such a free volunteer service, then please do not hesitate to contact our student - tutor coordinator, Ms Peg Spurrell ( 596 - 1546 ), to arrange for a meeting where the learner is matched with a trained tutor in or near his / her own community. Likewise, if you feel you wish to become a trained volunteer and help our Council, please contact any member, or myself, at 596-7278.
