BY AMANDA HARBY

This site is designed to help educators evaluate and select on-line educational delivery software. The analysis, conducted by Dr. Bruce Landon of Douglas College, New Westminster, B.C., describes and compares the most viable integrated and component applications currently in use in Canada.

The highlights of the Web site are the comparison tables on technical information and pricing, user ratings, and software features. It also focuses on: technical specifications; instructional design values; media capabilities; tools; ease of use; potential for collaboration and connectivity and contact information.

Integrated Applications examined are: WebCT, VirtualU, Top Class, Learning Space, Web Course in a Box and Interactive Learning Network.

Component Applications examined are: FirstClass, TeamWave, Norton Connect, Allaire Forums.

If you are an educator experienced with using any of these applications, you are invited to share your experience with other educators by completing a survey on one of the integrated applications. The Web-based surveys take 510 minutes to complete and can be found at: http://www.ctt.bc.ca/landonline/surveys.html

If your institution has a case study on a particular application, you can ask to have it added to the section on Case Studies. (Contact information follows.)

You can also join the discussion group to continue the discussion and analyses of online educational delivery applications through our Listserv. To subscribe or view the messages, point to: http://www.ctt.bc.ca/landonline/listserv.html

It is hoped that sharing this information will simplify the research process and reduce research time for educators and administrators investigating new delivery methods. It is anticipated that the site will be revised and updated over time, new ratings will come in and new software applications will be added.

The project is a collaborative effort by the B.C. Standing Committee on Educational Technology, the Centre for Curriculum, Transfer and Technology and the Office of Learning Technologies.
