Literacy practitioners involved in creating or using outcomes linked to occupational goals may want to check out the "Essential Skills" Web page that is part of Human Resources Development Canada's Web site at: http://www15.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca. Human Resources Development Canada is creating profiles of the skills that enable people to get and maintain different occupations.

Each profile contains skills in the following categories:

  • Reading Text
  • Use of Documents
  • Writing
  • Numeracy
  • Oral Communication
  • Thinking Skills
  • Working with Others
  • Computer Use
  • Continuous Learning

The Web page allows you to download Microsoft Word and WordPerfect versions of profiles. The Web page will contain up to 150 profiles of occupational groups. You will be pleased to see that the occupational groups are entry level and within the reach of most literacy students.

After checking out the Essential Skills Web page you may also want to take a look at the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Web page contained at the same address.
