The Learner's Advisory Network of the Movement for Canadian Literacy (MCL) has recently completed a research project on voice related software products. The Network, which is made up of volunteer adult literacy learners from across Canada, has identified technology as one of key issues in the development of life-long learning,

The Network sees voice software as a key to using technology to enhance the learning experience and help the user to improve literacy skills. Learners attempting to use computers as a learning tool often become discouraged because of the obstacles Presented by a keyboard. Often learners (and yes, instructors) can think far faster than they can type. In many cases, the Spell Check is useless to a learner who can't recognize the correct spelling of a word when presented-with a long list of possibilities. Moreover, typing can be awkward and painful for some older learners. Voice recognition software makes it possible for the user to bypass these frustrations.
