Réussir en math

Réussir en math is a learning program with two objectives for the user: (l) to improve competency in mathematics and (2) to learn how to use a computer.

The program is a skill-based approach to learning basic mathematical concepts including place value, the four basic operations, decimals, fractions, percentages and metric measurement. The content is presented in 18 modules. The program is suitable for both individual and group learning.

After choosing a module, such as, "Decimal Numbers", the user is presented with a standard format with four other choices: Exercices, Devoirs, Theorie, and Dossier. There are two types of 'Exercices': exercises that require a correct response and written problems that focus on a strategy for resolution of the problems. The Devoirs are additional exercises and problems that serve to evaluate the skills learned in the Exercices. The Dossier is simply a record keeping page that keeps track of your exercises and how well you perfo~med. The Theorie contains background information relevant to each math skill in two forms: multimedia films and text-based memory aids.

The program is very simple in its presentation. After a little practice, most learners will find it straightforward and easy to use. On the other hand, learners used to stimulating computer games may find it boring and may quickly lose interest. The most fun and appealing part is the 52 multimedia films in the Theorie section.

Reussir en math is completely self-paced. Learners can choose which activity and in what order.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Reussir en math is the 165-page accompanying Guide. It provides a strategy for using the program and the computer and a learning plan for each of the 18 modules. As any good math book, it has an answer key to all the exercises and problems.

This software is not a complex multimedia tool like The Numbers Disc; nor is it a truly function-based learning program like Measuring Up; however, Reussir en Math, because of its simplicity, can be a useful learning resource in a literacy program.

The content of Reussir en math was written by Serge Le Bel with the collaboration of Brigitte Malenfant. At present the program is only available in French, but the English version will soon be available.
