Bridging the Gap Between Literacy and Technology is the title of a two-part curriculum guide created by Samaritan House Training Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. The guide provides literacy practitioners in Manitoba and other parts of the country with tools to help them incorporate technology into a literacy curriculum.
The Educational Component of the guide is divided into four theme units: Ourselves, Humour, Employment and Memories. Each unit contains lesson plans that are cross-referenced with the third and fourth stages of Manitoba’s Certificate in Literacy and Learning. The lessons also contain suggestions for computer integration, assessment tools, and additional resources.
The Computer Component of the guide has been provided to support the computer integration ideas found in the Educational Component. In order to complete computer integration tasks such as creating a poster, students must possess the necessary computer skills.
The Computer Component contains a detailed, plain language guide to Microsoft Word 97. The guide covers a wide variety of tasks in Word, from the very basic to the advanced. Although the descriptions are sometimes cluttered with multiple ways of doing the same thing, they are generally easy to follow with lots of great visuals.
Because the Computer Component contains several short practice exercises, it could be used independently. The computer integration ideas found in the Educational Component lesson plans are cross-referenced with sections of the Computer Component making it easy to pull from only those sections needed for a particular lesson.
You can purchase both components of the Bridging the Gap Between Literacy & Technology curriculum guide from Samariton House Training Centre at a cost of $70.00. Separately the Educational Component costs $40.00 and the Computer Component costs $30.00.
There are also plans for the guide to be available online in June 2001 at the National Adult Literacy Database’s website, (www.nald.ca). Samaritan House can be contacted at:
