The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) has developed a searchable CD-ROM containing the Human Resources Development Canada Essential Skills Database along with InterOPTIONS a software version of the Canadian Work Preference Inventory (CWPI).

InterOPTIONS is a computer program which uses the Canadian Work Preference Inventory to match a person’s interests to occupations from the National Occupational Classification (NOC). After answering 50 questions about the type of work they prefer, students are provided with a list of corresponding occupations. Unfortunately, the software lists occupations with wide ranging educational requirements, some far beyond those of literacy students. Users can investigate the educational requirements and the possible workplaces of all of the occupations listed. The NOC codes for these occupations can then be used to search through the HRDC Essential Skills Database.

Using the CD-ROM you can search through Occupational Profiles contained in the HRDC Essential Skills Database. Each Occupational Profile outlines Essential Skills required for that occupation. The Essential Skills include information related to Reading Text, Document Use, Writing, Numeracy, Oral Communication, Thinking Skills, Problem Solving, Working with Others, Computer Use and more. Approximately 170 occupations are profiled, the majority of which require at most a high school diploma.

For more information about the HRDC Essential Skills Database you can visit http:// www15.hrdc-crhc.gc.ca/. The Essential Skills CD-ROM can be purchased from NALD at a cost of $10.
