Computer Objective: Learners will be able to insert, size and position a picture.
Literacy Objective: Learners will be able to write a simple greeting card message.
Materials: Word Processing 6 skill sheet, Lesson 13 Handout 1.
Introduction: Motivating adult learners to write can be challenging if they have been discouraged in the past. Including pictures with text can often help to make the writing experience fun and creative. This lesson will teach the basic skills needed to insert and manipulate a picture in a greeting card.
Procedure: In this lesson learners will create a simple greeting card out of two regular 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of coloured paper. Start by showing them a completed sample greeting card, making sure to show them how the papers were folded to create the card. (See Lesson 13 Handout 1.) Learners will need to start a new word processing document and change to Page Layout in the View menu. Have learners insert clip art from the Clip Art Gallery in Word. You can refer to Word Processing 6 skill sheet for instructions showing how to use clip art. Next, have learners change the clip art to the appropriate size and move it to the center of the bottom half of the page. Learners will have to make some adjustments to the positioning of the clip art. They should change the Position to Float over text and NOT Move object with text. The default Wrapping settings for pictures should be appropriate for this activity but you may want to take this opportunity to go over this topic with learners as well. Once the graphic is in place in the bottom 1/2 of the first page, have learners press Enter until they reach halfway down a second page. (Halfway down a page will be approximately 4.5 inches on the vertical ruler.) Learners should press Enter a few more times and then type their greeting. The greeting should be centered and use different fonts, font sizes and font styles. (See Lesson 13 Handout 1 for a sample greeting.)
