Feature of the month | May 2012

Everyone with a kind heart and a desire to succeed likes to hear a success story.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) has an entire page of its website devoted to individuals who have succeeded at improving their skill levels. All deserve a pat on the back for their efforts.

“In every part of the country there is a story waiting to be told about how Canadians can benefit from our programs and initiatives,” the introduction reads. “The following Success Stories are about Canadians who are making better choices to lead productive and rewarding lives in their family life, at work and in their communities.”

One story is about a Winnipeg welder who developed a positive outlook and a need to succeed during an Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS) program. Another article describes the efforts of a Vancouver children’s entertainer who made great strides as a career development practitioner during an Opportunities Fund program for people with disabilities.

Also featured, a video presentation - entitled Let’s Get Cooking - highlights the success of a Saint John labourer who benefited from the federal government’s Apprenticeship Incentive Grant program. He’s happy to be working in the cooking trade and on his way to obtaining a Red Seal designation.

Sub-sections of the HRSDC Success Stories page include:

  • Aboriginal Canadians
  • People with Disabilities
  • Homelessness
  • Protecting Jobs
  • Literacy and Essential Skills
  • Skills Development
  • Seniors, and
  • Youth/Students

Each section contains links to stories that both inspire and inform the reader about HRSDC programs that are making a difference in the lives of Canadians.
