FESA in the community

Our local programs are provided free of charge in association with community agencies. These agencies already work with at risk groups and include but are not limited to: women's shelters, immigrant aid agencies, ESL learning agencies, outreach centres, aboriginal community centres and others. This model of program delivery ensures that the target audiences for our programs are being reached. An added benefit of this approach is that our programs are often integrated with other family literacy or educational programs. Facilitators and participants alike celebrate the flexibility and adaptability of this approach to program delivery.

Local Programming

Calgary Community Family Literacy Program was created as a framework for program delivery in the city of Calgary. It includes LAPS, Books for Babies/Jump Start, Parent-Child Mother Goose and Homespun.

LAPS stands for Literacy and Parenting Skills. This program won the 2000 Canada Post Literacy Award for Community Leadership in Literacy. It targets parents who have difficulty reading and writing. The curriculum is usually spread over eight to ten weekly sessions. Participants improve their literacy skills, learn how to instill good literacy practices in their children and start to look at learning in a positive way. All of the LAPS programs are offered nationally. For more information on all of the LAPS programs click here. If you would like to purchase LAPS materials online please visit our Buy Online page or you can Contact Us.

A-LAPS is the LAPS program adapted for aboriginal audiences. The curriculum also includes topics on aboriginal culture and spirituality.

LAPS-ESL is the LAPS program adapted for ESL audiences. Supplements are also available that allow facilitators to customize the curriculum to the level they are teaching. More information on LAPS-ESL supplements is available here.

Grandir avec mon enfant is the LAPS program adapted for francophone audiences. Grandir avec mon enfant est a version française de LAPS.

Books for Babies/Jump Start is offered through the Calgary Community Family Literacy Program (CCFLP). This program provides mothers and fathers with baby books and a library card so they can start to develop their children's language skills. Jumpstart is a three session program that covers such topics as Helping Babies Grow, Helping Babies Talk and Helping Parents Survive.

Parent-Child Mother Goose is another program offered through the Calgary Community Family Literacy Program (CCFLP). It is a group experience for parents and their babies and young children. Parents learn how to give their children a healthy early experience with language and communication.

Homespun is a program for adults who want to learn more about reading and interacting with their children. It is offered through the Calgary Community Family Literacy Program (CCFLP). Some of the skills parents will learn are: how to be comfortable reading and telling stories to your children, how books can open doors for communication and quality time together.

Learning Circles Learning Circles provide the opportunity for LAPS participants who wish to build their reading and writing skills. The program takes place in an informal, supportive, group environment with guidance from a facilitator.
