Facilitator Training
FESA offers several models of facilitator training for individuals working in a wide range of community and/or workplace settings. Our training modules are adaptable to the specific needs of potential facilitators who are working with New Canadians, Aboriginal communities, single fathers/mothers, francophone communities, and diverse workplaces.
LAPS training sessions will be of interest to literacy coordinators, instructors, facilitators, health care workers, volunteer tutors and community workers who work with at-risk parents. Sessions are affordable and cost depends on the number of training days and trainers' travel expenses.
Literacy and Parenting Skills (LAPS) is an innovative, award-winning family literacy program designed to prepare facilitators to set up and operate LAPS family literacy classes in their communities. Low literacy materials based on parenting topics have been adapted to strengthen the literacy skills of the parents and to give them strategies to model good literacy practices with their children. Topics covered by these sessions include: Building Self-esteem in Your Children, Positive Discipline, Anger Management, Communication and Listening Skills, Passing on Your Values and Traditions.
During a typical three-day LAPS facilitator-training workshop, an emphasis is placed on learning how to facilitate the program. Topic areas covered will include: facilitation strategies, assessing community needs, literacy instructional techniques, cross-cultural facilitation strategies and parent education.
Aboriginal Literacy and Parenting Skills (A-LAPS) facilitator training is an adaptation of the LAPS facilitator training. This training is geared more towards the specific needs of Aboriginal people and communities in both urban and rural settings. The training incorporates cultural practices and is often delivered in collaboration with Elders or other knowledge people in the community.
Facilitator training for the Literacy and Parenting Skills (LAPS) program and its adaptations is one of the four arms of our work. It is an essential element in building community capacity to address literacy and parenting skills issues. Our facilitators and trainers become the local support system for FESA's work but are also part of a nationwide network of literacy workers.
To date, over 2500 people across Canada have received LAPS/A-LAPS facilitator training.
Information on our most recently held trainings is available here.
