It's all about people
The social and economic benefits that our society will reap from increased family literacy are enormous. However, at the end of the day, our motivation comes from the individuals that have participated in our programs. The comments below illustrate what our programs are doing for individuals and their families.
"...part of my job is to encourage them to believe in themselves and their own abilities as a parent and as a reader or a writer. I believe too, it is important to be nonjudgmental, to accept them for who they are, to really trust in me." ~ Wilma Rubens, LAPS facilitator
"The program has offered our clients a safe place to learn, grow and heal." ~ Tess Gordy, Director, Brenda Strafford Centre for the Prevention of Domestic Violence
"I think they walk away feeling better about themselves. I think they walk away believing in themselves as a person as well as a parent and I think they walk away believing that they are doing the best job that they know how to do ." ~ Jackie Smith, LAPS facilitator
"As in parenting skills, it's taught me a whole lot. It's taught me that there is support out there for those frustrating times." ~ Cindy, LAPS participant
"[The program is] excellent for promoting literacy and fostering community. It gives moms and kids time for connecting one on one and is a great program available at no cost, many others are too expensive." ~ Parent-Child Mother Goose participant
"We found your program to be a tremendous help to us. It was a real eye opener. It was not at all what we expected. We came to this program believing it was our son who needed to be changed but we see it must begin with us." ~ A., LAPS participant
"Two important things I learned was the importance of reading to our child and what value it brings to her--especially in the long term."~Jumpstart program participant
