The Municipalities Act brought another new thingtaxes. My parents had to pay $10 a year. As such things came into the community, people tried to adapt. But there was no plan to provide jobs so that people could earn the money they now needed. The people in power, outsiders who worked in the community, may have had good intentions. But there was little municipal funding. Most of the work was make-work projects like putting in a community pump where people could get their water, digging ditches, raking and hauling garbage to the dumps. Some funding was used to renovate the church, which was also used as a community hall. We went there to see movies, such as westerns, everybodys favourite. The cowboys always won the war, so we couldnt help cheering for them instead of the Indians. Most people my age always wanted to be cowboys. I sometimes wonder if that was another part of the master plan to brainwash the Innu into thinking that white culture is superior to ours. |
