Family Literacy is like a fire. While taking part in this fire, a spark will leap from you to your child, warming your hearts. You will understand that you are an important part of this fire. You will learn that the respect for and protection of this fire is necessary for it to continue burning. The positive effects of learning through stories and activities will be remembered. Even if the fire goes out, the memory remains. You will still feel the warmth of your fire. Dedication I would like to dedicate this book to the students and tutors who made this program a success. The students, who wrote the stories for this book, made a choice six months ago to join this program with the desire to make some positive changes in their lives and in their children's lives. For some, it took a great deal of courage to cross that threshold into a learning environment where reading and writing, skills that have long been avoided because of bad experiences and/or lack of self-confidence, are every-day activities. For others, this program served to meet specific literacy needs required for employment, further education, or just personal interest. Thank you Eliza, Jenny, Leona, Laurie Ann, Ron, Shirley and Mike, for your support, input, commitment, terrific stories, and lots of laughter. Katherine Gullion |
