A friendly doctor

Reg Daye : Musquodoboit Harbour

I was captured in December of 1944. They took me to Cortina in Italy, where people ski now. There was so much snow, I had never seen that much snow. The war ended in Italy in February of 1945. The Canadian army went to southern France. At the time, I did not know anything about the Canadians leaving Italy for France, because I was a Prisoner of War. A doctor in Cortina was really good to me. His nephew was a Prisoner of War in Canada. He used to hear from him about how good they were to him in Canada. His nephew had said that when the war was over he was going to stay in Canada. So anyway, he came to me that one morning and told me I was going to Germany.
