The Paris of the
East I spent a year based on Beirut. It was everything it was cracked up to be. It was really the "Paris of the East". There were night-clubs and everything you could imagine. In the winter you could ski down to the sea and swim. There was no shortage of cars or gas. So when we came in from patrol we went on leave. I went twice on leave to Damascus. I saw Josephine Baker in a night-club. She was sort of one of the real superstars of the time. She came to perform in Damascus. I also met a friend I went to school with. He was in the army camp just outside of Damascus, and I had a visit with him. 123 Words
