1. Birth order in families affects personality characteristics and learned traits. Children ask the question “How do I behave in order to have a place in my family”? Their “place” is determined somewhat by their birth order (first born, second born, third born - older, middle younger) and by their individual interpretations of family situations. Factors which impact the meaning of birth order are:

  • family size
  • age difference between children
  • family reaction to the child’s efforts to belong
  • socioeconomic position of the family
  • family view of gender roles

For more information on birth order and behavior please contact the Saskatoon Adlerian Society or your local library.
