Birth order in families affects personality characteristics and
learned traits. Children ask the question How do I behave in order to
have a place in my family? Their place is determined somewhat
by their birth order (first born, second born, third born - older, middle
younger) and by their individual interpretations of family situations. Factors
which impact the meaning of birth order are:
- family size
- age difference between children
- family reaction to the childs efforts to belong
- socioeconomic position of the family
- family view of gender roles
For more information on birth order and behavior please contact the
Saskatoon Adlerian Society or your local library.
