Should I Eat For Two?

  • No, in early pregnancy you only need 100 more calories a day. (i.e. 1 glass of milk and a piece of fruit)

  • Eat according to your appetite. Listen to your body.

  • In the last six months, you only need 300 extra calories a day. (i.e. - A sandwich and a glass of milk).

  • Expect to gain at least 24 pounds. You may gain even more if you are a teenager.

  • If you feel morning sickness, it’s best to eat the foods that agree with you.

Healthy Eating Tips

  • Enjoy regular meals and healthy snacks.

  • Enjoy foods that are high in iron, fiber, and calcium (Appendix A).

  • Use “Canada’s Food Guide For Healthy Eating” as your guide.

  • Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine.

  • Moderation and variety each day is key to healthy eating!

Prenatal vitamins can be taken but should never replace healthy food.

Talk to your doctor about the amount of exercise you should be doing.

Myth: Women will lose a tooth every time they get pregnant.
Fact: Not true. But, plaque forms on your teeth faster during pregnancy, so
brush and floss your teeth often. Be sure to visit your dentist!
