Joan's Story
Joan Reid – Guysborough County Adult Learning Association

My name is Joan Reid. I am going to the ALP GAP Program.

Before I came to GALA my life was kind of down in the learning area. I was put into a special class in between grades four and five. I had trouble all the way through school. I felt like I wasn't going anywhere so I dropped out in grade seven. Then I went to work at the fish plant for seven years.

I wanted to improve my reading, math, writing, and self confidence. I can not drive a car so I had to get someone to drive me to school. It is hard to get a drive. There are no taxis or buses in our area. Also, I have family stresses, like getting the kids ready for school and trying to pay bills with no money. But I wanted to better myself by getting an education and a job.

So, I started coming to GALA for upgrading. I have had many successes. I have improved my math spelling, reading, and computer skills. Also, my self confidence is better. I find it relaxing and comfortable to come to classes.

My goal is to get a full time job and continue my upgrading.
