The Power of Adult Learning
Matt Dickie - Colchester Adult Learning Association

Adult learning is beneficial to all who will take the time and effort to do it. I strongly believe this statement because anyone who is willing to better themselves can never be doing a bad thing. Every step forward, even if it's a little bit, is still progress made. These days a high school diploma or equivalent are very important when finding a job. That being said, adult learning is an excellent way to further your education and continue on the road to learning.

G.E.D. or high school diplomas are in such high demand now that it is hard to find a job that does not require it. Writing and completing your G.E.D. can take you lots of places and open many doors of opportunity. A lot of community college courses, actually almost all, accept a G.E.D. certificate to enter their programs. Even if you already have a career, furthering your education will always be a benefit.

Adult learning programs such as C.A.L.A., adult high or the G.E.D. program are all great opportunities to improve your learning skills. This can better your life by opening up a lot more job positions available to those who have obtained a diploma or equivalent. You feel good when you know you have accomplished something. Math, reading, writing and comprehension are all around us on a daily basis. Working on these skills betters our knowledge of the world around us.

We can consider ourselves somewhat lucky as Nova Scotians, because all adult upgrading to high school completion is absolutely free. In some provinces there is a charge to the student to upgrade. There are approximately thirty networks of adult learning across our province, all of which are offered free of charge. In many places of the world adult learning is not common and in a few countries it is almost unheard of. We all have the option to better our education, and our future. All it takes is a little time, effort, and the desire to learn.

With all these benefits to adult learning, there is no reason why any one should say they "can't". If you have the ability and energy to better yourself, take it and run with it. There are really no limits or boundaries when it comes to upgrading. Also, with all the different programs this province offers, there is no reason and one should ever say they cannot further their education. The skills you learn and the benefits you gain are absolutely awesome. Now that's the power of adult learning!
