I am Dianne Greencorn; I am 46 years old and a mother of three, one boy and two girls. I am a grandmother of one little boy. David, my son is in NSCC in Dartmouth and Erica is going to the NSCC in Port Hawkesbury, my youngest girl Jessica is going to Guysborough who is in grade nine, she has ADHD, so I can't leave her alone to long. My daughter Erica was living at home. I had to drive her to the NSCC by 8:30 am and than go to my school in Guysborough to GALA which started at 9:00 am then at 3:30 pm leave and go pick up Erica by 4:30 pm, I did this for a while until she moved to Port Hawkesbury.
My husband, who works away and home on the weekends, he can't read and his writing is not that great, I have to read everything that comes into the house. My reading was not that great, so I made up my mind and I found out about GALA.
I've been attending from 2007- 09 and my reading, typing and also my spelling has improved a lot. With a grade nine education you can't find a good job, so that is why I came back.
The roads in the winter are very bad some days and I can't come in or the schools may be closed.
My reading is improving a lot. I have been slowing down and starting to understand what I am reading. Also, I used a phonics program called Lexia; it has helped me a lot.
Reading and writing go hand in hand; as you improve one, you improve another. I went to a workshop about writing; it taught me I can write anything, the way I feel or the way I see things. Since I've been learning more, I write more on my own, both at school and at home.
I met new people and made new friends and having fun learning.
I would like to get my GED and get a job.
