Acknowledgments

This practical guide is the result of the hard work, perseverance, creativity, and commitment of the volunteer members of the Family Literacy Action Group (F.L.A.G.) committee. From their initial meetings to develop the organization, to their on-going support, feedback, and guidance for this and other projects, these people have given countless hours of their own time to establish and promote family literacy in this province. These committee members, who deserve our sincere thanks and recognition, are Bonnie Annicchlarico, Maureen Sanders, Yvon Laberge, Kathy Day, Candice Jackson, Judy Pool, Bev Knutson-Shaw, and Tony Garlock.

Another essential member of F.L.A.G. and this project in particular is Allen VandenBerg of Medicine Hat College. Allen has been involved in family literacy in Alberta since the Roots of Literacy symposium in Brooks, and has served as a skilful and supportive administrator to F.L.A.G. since its inception. Medicine Hat College has also provided important contributions in kind to the organization, both in Medicine Hat and at their Brooks campus.

Our thanks also to the F.L.A.G. coordinator Jana Joujan. Jana's support for the practical guide project has ranged from providing a much-needed injection of humor to diligently passing on new information and resources on family literacy as they became available.

Our sincere appreciation goes to the National Literacy Secretariat of Human Resources Development Canada and Alberta Advanced Education and Career Development for funding this project. Both the staff and volunteer members of F.L.A.G. value, in particular, the knowledgeable support and guidance of Yvette Souque and Keith Anderson.

Finally, producing this resource would have been impossible if not for the patience, cooperation, and enthusiasm of literacy and family literacy workers across the province and beyond. Thank you to each and every one! A special thanks to Karen Nelson of the Homespun Family Literacy Program in Brooks and Maureen Sanders of Prospects Literacy Association in Edmonton for supplying the photographs used in the practical guide.
