He had tried a number of ways before now, slipping in under the fence, and the carrots had been delicious. Mr. Crab had quickly added more fencing underneath the rails and now he couldn't get under there. He had tried going over the fence, but the fence was just too high for a little rabbit to leap over. So he had watched from the tall grass, longing for the taste of the sweet carrots day after day as Mr. Crab had tended his garden.

One day, he waited for night to come and he dug under the fence until morning, then he went back to his hiding place to wait until Mr. Crab went inside for his dinner. As soon as Mr. Crab had left, the little rabbit dug a little bit further and popped up all dirty and tired, but inside the garden fence. Again the carrots were delicious and he went out back under the fence hoping that Mr. Crab wouldn't notice his hole, so he could come back tomorrow for more carrots. Too bad, Mr. Crab found the hole and filled it in, using rocks to make sure that the rabbit didn't dig under again.

Rabbit had to think of another plan. He wanted those carrots so badly, it was almost all he could think about. But he was out of ideas. Suddenly, he thought of something and his little paws twitched with excitement. Every week or so, Mr. Crab would bring a wheelbarrow full of compost for the garden. He would often leave it outside the fence in the morning and when he came back from eating his lunch, he would take the wheelbarrow into the garden through the gate and dump it in a heap till he had time to spread it out. Rabbit had decided to hide in the wheelbarrow when Mr. Crab went in for lunch.
