Most teenagers who smoke cigarettes do it to show off to their friends. They think it is a cool thing to do and yes it can hurt you. It's very bad for you and can lead to serious illnesses once you get older. My best advice to you is never start smoking at all during your lifetime and you'll be wise like me.
