| PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE I'm pleased to take this opportunity to convey greetings from your newly elected board of directors and to share with you our vision for the future. In a recent scan of provincial, national and international agendas for the 21st century, the call for commitment to comprehensive lifelong learning at home, in our schools and communities and in our places of work was loud and clear. Lifelong learning is clearly being acknowledged as the key to our future social and economic well being. The goals and objectives that have been set down in countries around the world echo those of AACE. Enhanced standards of research and practice, increased accessibility and responsiveness of programs and services for adult learners, increased communication and collaboration amongst stakeholders, increased advocacy on behalf of adult learning needs and systems, and stronger commitments to the professional development of practitioners are common themes for all. This confirms for us that the established mission and mandate for AACE is sound and relevant. In a recent planning session conducted May 28th in Red Deer, we prepared a preliminary agenda for the next three years. Simply put, it is our intent to revitalize our Association through tan aggressive pursuit of our stated mandate and through a position of leadership within the Alberta adult learning system. We propose to support and encourage Alberta's 3-year business plan for adult learning. We propose to foster awareness and adoption of selected recommendations embodied in the UNESCO adult learning agenda for the future. We intend to build connections with our sister associations at the regional, national and international levels. And we propose to bring recognizable benefit to our members. Our vision for AACE is that of a vital, dynamic network of practitioners, providers and other stakeholders, working together to improve the conditions and support for adult learners in Alberta. It is clear that we will require the active participation of our members if this vision is to be realized. Your board is committed to providing leadership and support. We will be calling upon the membership to assist us. I encourage you to consider the roles and contributions that you might make in support of the interests of AACE. We are in a position to have a significant impact on the conditions for adult learning in Alberta and, hence, in the lives of thousands of Albertans. I invite you to assist us in ensuring that our adult learning system is a key component of the "Alberta Advantage" and a model for others. Blane Harvey Meet the AACE Board of Directors!
