Attention: Adult Literacy Educators

submitted by Dianne Conrad

The University of Alberta's Certificate in Adult and Continuing Education is offering a new 3 credit elective course entitled STAPLE '96 (Supplemental Training for Alberta Practitioners in Literacy Education) which broadly addresses issues of assessment and instruction in the field of adult literacy.

Available on CD-ROM, STAPLE'96 is Canada's first multi-media training program for adult literacy educators, and consists of five modules:
Introduction to Assessment; Reading Assessment; Teaching Reading; Writing Assessment; and Teaching Writing. In a windows-based format, you can choose modules and objectives, see and hear other students and tutors, work with concepts, and respond via the keyboard or mouse. A handbook provides reference materials and worksheets.

STAPLE '96 was sponsored by the Literacy Coordinators of Alberta and developed with financial support from the National Literacy Secretariat, Human Resources Development Canada and Advanced Education and Career Development. According to developers Pat Campbell (Ph.D.) and Flo Brokop (M.Ed.), STAPLE'96 is being received extremely well in both Canada and abroad. For more information on STAPLE '96 contact Dianne Conrad at the University of Alberta (phone: 403 492-1501).
