WELCOME!

A warm welcome is extended to Lynnette Taylor who has joined the Advisory Committee for Books for Babies . Lynnette brings a long, varied background in primary education and interest in literacy. We look forward to working with her!

TELECONFERENCE®

Books for Babies® hosted a TELECONFERENCE on April 13th. The following people and sites took part:

  • Katherine Lockhart - Humber Literacy Council
  • Charmaine Lynch - Deer Lake
  • Bev Hulan, Linda Collier - Bay St. George
  • Wayne Hallett - Grand Falls
  • Noreen Careen, Wendy Cumden - Labrador City
  • Colleen Hayter, Marilyn Budgell - Peterview
  • Marie Morris - Cormack
  • Danica Gill, Nina Genge - Straits Literacy

The Books for Babies® groups shared great information with everyone. It was agreed it was a great thing to do again! Activities and ideas shared include:

  • quarterly birthday parties for giving out follow-up books
  • parties at local libraries
  • walk-a-thons
  • giving out books at the Santa Claus Parade
  • tickets on theme baskets

Concern was expressed that all registration cards, especially in larger areas, were not returned. Children could be missed when follow-up books were given out.

Other items discussed were:

  • uniform registration cards
  • using a board book as the Year One book again
  • taping the books in the program
  • distributing newsletters from one data base
  • having a regular teleconference
  • "project funding"

The next proposal to be submitted by the Advisory Committee outlines the production of two family literacy place mats. One would be produced for Family Literacy Day, January 27th, the other would be placed in the Initial Package.

The proposal requesting this funding has already been submitted to the National Literacy Secretariat and it is hoped that we will hear shortly that funding will be provided!
