Getting
To Know You

Tina, your new Provincial Coordinator, had a display
at the Annual General Meeting of the Laubach Literacy Councils in
Stephenville on October 17 and 18. |
The Humber
Literacy Council hired a new Provincial Coordinator for Books
for Babies®. Tina Stewart began work on October 8 at the
provincial office in College of the North Atlantic in Corner Brook.
Tina is
really looking forward to visiting with the volunteers who make Books
for Babies® so successful and renewing a sense of joint
effort for everyone.
There are more than fifty
towns in the province where volunteers provide tote bags containing
a first book and useful literacy information to new parents.
Our sponsors
and partners help to keep the books free to families who register with
the Books for Babies®
program.
It is
Tina’s job to keep in contact with local groups, help them provide books
and information to families, create a province-wide database of program
information and let everyone know about the people behind Books
for Babies® through newspapers, radio, television and
the website.
To keep the program running,
Tina will also develop the support of sponsors and partners. Their support
is crucial as we work together to promote the benefits of early reading.
“I am
glad that I have volunteered for many years and worked in jobs that
keep me close to people,” Tina said, as she began her new role. “That
contact is what helps us share interests, goals, problems and good times.
Working together we can make a world that is full of reading and learning
for families and children. That world will grow with time and good memories
of Books for Babies®.”
Books
for Babies® makes the news!
On December
9th, Books for Babies®
hosted the monthly Community Resource Network luncheon at the Humber
Community YMCA in Corner Brook. The Community Resource Network brings
together representatives from community service and business groups
for an opportunity to meet, chat, eat and listen to a presentation from
the hosting organization. Tina Stewart, the Provincial Coordinator for
Books for Babies®, provided
attendees with a Power Point slide presentation about the program, the
work of the Chapters throughout the province, her goals and future plans.
A highlight of the luncheon saw Maureen Kennedy, the President of the
Humber Literacy Council, honor two of the original members of Books
for Babies®. We presented gift certificates (from a
bookstore, of course) to Bessie Merrigan, the originator of our program,
and Isabella Fry, the first Coordinator for Books
for Babies®.
