Maureen Kennedy, President, Humber Literacy Council, speaks of the longstanding and much-appreciated efforts of Isabella
Fry (first to Maureen’s left) and Bessie Merrigan (second to Maureen’s left). For more than
ten years, both Bessie and Isabella have been involved with literacy programs, including Books for Babies® and literacy councils
at the local, provincial and national levels.
The event had over 30 people in attendance which represented approximately 25 different agencies, groups and service organizations. At the beginning of the luncheon, everyone introduced themselves and their “resource”. People found opportunities to chat as they picked up their buffet lunch, while they ate and as they prepared to leave the one-hour event.

We also had media reps from The Western Star, Optipress-The Humber Log, Rogers Cable-Corner Brook Café and Steele Communications-K-Rock/VOCM radio station. Interviews were conducted with our honorees and were aired province-wide on radio and television. The newspapers carried write-ups on the event and provided additional coverage for both our special guests and our program.

A schedule was completed of agencies willing to host the Community Resource Network luncheons from now until December 2004.

Anyone interested in receiving notification of upcoming luncheons is welcome to contact Tina Stewart at (709) 634-4888 and babybooks@ed.cna.nl.ca or Erica Humber, Volunteer Coordinator, Regional Volunteer Network, at (709) 639-1829 and ericahumber@yahoo.com.

The Book Stork needs You!

Putting out a Call for Stories from Books for Babies® Chapters around our province.
The Book Stork newsletter wants to showcase the people and events of the community and regional Chapters of Books for Babies®!

This means that your stories, however big or small, are important to us all and what better way to spread your News throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Each edition of The Book Stork from now on will feature articles, news stories, special activities, meet the Chapter Volunteers, happenings in your community or region that involved Books for Babies®.

So, here is the call for you to put your fingers to keyboards, pen to paper and click that shutter on the camera—then send it to Tina at the provincial office (by mail or email) so she can include your Chapter’s item in the next edition of The Book Stork.

The next edition is scheduled to appear in March 2004 so don’t delay. Gather your group together and share your Chapter’s ideas with us all!

Ruth Doyle is the new Coordinator of volunteers for the Bay St. George Books for Babies® Chapter.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council held its Annual General Meeting this past October in Stephenville. Ruth Doyle of the Bay St. George Chapter of Books for Babies® helped to provide information on the program to those attending the meetings and workshops during the event.

Ruth has eight volunteers to help her visit new mothers and babies in the hospital in Stephenville. Volunteer groups like Books for Babies® now have a bright new room within the new Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital to use when our volunteers visit new parents and babies. Helping Ruth deliver our program are: Cavell Russell, Muriel Chislett, Susan Oates, Bev Hulan, Linda Collier, Marilyn Young, Jan Smith and Joan MacLean. Thank you all !
