A Love of Reading Once Begun
Never Ends

Books for Babies® is an early literacy intervention program for newborns and their parents-caregivers in Newfoundland and Labrador. Its goals are:

  • To raise the level of family literacy
  • To promote the benefits of reading with young children
  • To encourage parents to improve their literacy skills

Books for Babies® was begun in 1992 with its first volunteers delivering materials to newborns and parents in January 1994 in Corner Brook.

Check out Books for Babies® on the National Adult Literacy Database website: www.nald.ca Follow the links for the provincial literacy groups to our Books for Babies® pages.

General News, Views and Upcoming Events

Searching for a Book Stork !! We think we have a great idea for a display symbol for Books for Babies®! Is there anyone out there who would like to enter a competition to:

Create a soft-toy version of our book stork “mascot” for use in promotional events, displays and as a portable symbol of our program? The book stork should be at least 18 inches tall, made of soft but sturdy material and able to stand on its own.

Once we have one large one made for provincial office use, we’d like to get lots of the same or smaller book storks made so that each Chapter has one of its own. The next step in this project will be to have another competition—this one for children up to age 4— to give our book stork a name ! Please have people contact Tina at the provincial office (634-4888) for more details !

Family Literacy Day
January 27, 2004

Don’t forget to celebrate Family Literacy Day on or near January 27, 2004. Take photos, send a story about your event to The Book Stork for our next newsletter.

We extend congratulations to Training Wheels Family Resource Centre in Springdale and its Program Coordinator, Kathryn Barry Paddock (673-3981). They have secured support from the Copperbelt (Newtel) Pioneers for a Chapter of Books for Babies® in their area.

Welcome to Ms. Sandra Lush, the new Program Coordinator at The Tree House Family Resource Centre in Deer Lake (635-5808).

Congratulations to Bernie Bowers who is the new Assistant Coordinator at the Pasadena Tree House Family Resource Centre (686-2305).

Trout River to Eddie’s Cove West now has a Literacy Coordinator. Ms. Cara Welsh has her office in Parson’s Pond and is working with communities in her region to establish or re-activate literacy councils and raise awareness of literacy services and programs (243-2267).

On behalf of everyone involved in the Books for Babies® program, the provincial office looks forward to working with Sandra, Bernie, Cara and all current, newly-formed and re-activated Chapters throughout our province.

Plan for our annual teleconference in May, 2004, and let Tina know what you would like to hear discussed during that session.

January is the month when the provincial coordinator submits a funding proposal to the Literacy Branch of the Department of Education to continue funding for the coordination our program. If you’d like to contribute your voice of support to this proposal, please contact Tina by mid-January. The submission deadline is January 30, 2004.
