Chapters Respond! Thank You!

Editorial: It is with great pleasure that I include articles and photos from Chapters in this issue of The Book Stork. Thank you for sharing your news. I'm looking forward to more in future issues.

Since October, 2003, the number of Books for Babies® partners has increased from 20 to 36. Some libraries, literacy centres and school board offices (e.g. Vista School Board) may soon have Chapters.

Thank you to those who provided Letters of Support for recent funding proposals.

Thank you also to Martha MacDonald's young helpers as they keep our program growing in the Goose Bay area.

Congratulations to everyone with the Kilbride-Ferryland Family Resource Coalition. 500 children receiving tote bags and birthday books in a large region makes for a lot of work.

On the provincial scene, Books for Babies® continues to receive support from the Sisters of Mercy, Royal Bank of Canada, College of the North Atlantic, Honda, ABCCANADA, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Scholastic Canada Ltd., Kids Can Press, and members of the media.

I continue to work with regions where our program does not have an active presence as we approach the 10th Anniversary of Books for Babies®.

That's not bad for a 1994 pilot project of the Humber Literacy Council! (Tina Stewart)

Plans for 2004-2005:

We are working on these improvements to our program materials and delivery (pending funding) :

To design and produce highquality, portable display panels for use at Chapter events, in libraries, resource centres and other public places.

To improve the contents of our tote bags by adding a small version of our child-friendly book stork to each tote bag.

To make available a CD-ROM with a Power Point presentation at no cost to Chapters. ($10 to others) In photos and text, the slide-show explains our program, materials, partners and volunteer Chapter events.

As always, your feedback on these ideas and your suggestions for others are appreciated.

625 copies of the Winter 2003 issue of The Book Stork were distributed to Books for Babies® volunteers, libraries, family resource centres, MPs, MHAs, literacy councils, learning centres, government departments, school boards, sponsors and program partners.

Cormack Chapter - On March 24th, at the Cormack Public Library, we took advantage of a preschool program on the local Recreation Winter Carnival schedule to give out Books for Babies® packages.

Two new babies and Moms and six preschoolers and Moms attended the event. photo of Recreation WInter Carnival participantsWe'll deliver the packages to those who couldn't make it.

Our group made for a nice little social that included coloring, crafts, feltboard stories, fingerplays, playtime and an ice cream cone snack. The craft materials and snacks were provided by the local Recreation program. (Marie Morris)
