Bay St. George Books for Babies®

The Bay St. George Literacy Council held its 10th Books for Babies® party in June.
In September, Ruth Doyle, Books for Babies ® Co-ordinator, and Lin Collier, Student Co-ordinator, will organize a 10th anniversary celebration. For more information call 709-643-4121. (Bev Hulan, Ruth Doyle)
Members of the Books for Babies® Provincial Advisory Committee and the Provincial Coordinator would like to congratulate everyone. "Thank You" to all the volunteers on the literacy council, especially those who have provided Books for Babies® materials to families in the Bay St. George region during the past ten years.
Bishop's Falls Books for Babies®
On Friday, October 21st, the Bishop's Falls Public Library hosted a 1 year old birthday party for the 18 children who registered in the year 2004.
We played ball, sang songs clapping our hands and gave blocks to the children to amuse themselves while moms filled out the evaluation forms.
The books and some Hallowe'en stickers were presented to the children.
Southwest Books for Babies® (Port aux Basques area)
Southwest Books for Babies, based in Port aux Basques, cohosted with the Port aux Basques Come Home Year Committee, a Terry Rielly Teddy Bear Concert on Sunday, July 24, 2005.
It was a great and exciting event for approximately
150 children and their families and was a part of the Calendar of Events
for Come Home Year 2005. Mr. Rielly entertained all who attended for
approximately 1½ hours
in his interactive, all ages show. At one point almost every
child was on the stage singing and doing the actions of the final song.
As part of this event, Books for Babies decided that admission was free but asked for donations if people wanted to contribute. This raised over $570.00 and we also received a donation from Terry Rielly and 20 cassettes to sell and keep 100% of the profits. By providing pamphlets and posters, we took advantage of a wonderful publicity opportunity!
Finally, a local children's book author, Valerie Parsons, was present to display and sell her newly released Jitterpop and BumbleRoc, as well as the illustrator, PAB native Jeff Musseau.
It was a special day for children's literacy in Port aux Basques and we are so proud to have been associated with it. Our thanks to the Come Home Year Committee and especially to Terry Rielly, for his special entertainment. (Melanie Parsons)
