boy jumping over pile of leavesBooks for Babies® is an early literacy intervention program for newborns and their parents or care-givers in Newfoundland and Labrador. Its goals are:

  • To raise the level of family literacy
  • To promote the benefits of reading with young children
  • To encourage parents to improve their literacy skills

Books for Babies® was begun in 1992 by the Humber Literacy Council with its first volunteers delivering materials to newborns and parents in Corner Brook, January, 1994.

photo of Alex and Jessica with BFB's book stork mascotNew quote for our Book Stork model: New quotes for a soft-toy version of our book stork "mascot" to help us raise awareness of our program have come in at $300 per display model. I have submitted proposals to government and corporate funders but to no avail. Despite delivery partners' enthusiasm for the idea, no sponsors to date feel this is how they wish to support Books for Babies®. So, for now, I carry the prototype to events and enjoy the attention, smiles and hugs that the book stork receives from children and adults alike. (photo: Alex and Jessica, fans of our book stork.)

Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) donated $2,000 to Books for Babies® to support the production of 1,000 tote bags.

These bags will be filled with Books for Babies® early literacy items and then distributed by volunteers to 1,000 families with newborn babies throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. RBC is also providing free banking services for our Early Literacy Networking Conference in May 2006. (Tina Stewart)

Mill Lane Enterprises in St. John's continues to produce our canvas tote bags. These little bags carry much more than the initial early literacy materials. Some have been passed down from one sibling to another and carried toys and books for up to ten years! The Books for Babies ® book stork symbol, copyrighted in 1994 (HLC Inc.) continues to be the recognizable "face" of our early literacy program.

3M Canada has supported Books for Babies® again this year by donating $2,500 to assist with the production of 1,000 tote bags.

During their Customer Appreciation Event in St. John's in September, Books for Babies® photos were included in the big-screen slide-show. Tina gave a brief overview of our program to the approximately 150 3M Canada-NL corporate customers and assembled 3M Canada staff. As a surprise addition to the evening, Cathy Ivany and Tina presented a tote bag of early literacy materials to an expectant mother, one of the corporate customers. (Tina Stewart)
