Newsletter for Parents
Also, thanks to LDC, we have the opportunity to design a yearly
newsletter for parents registered in the program. Each parent who receives an
initial package and who registers for the follow-up program will receive a
newsletter with the follow-up books, or by mail where the four-year follow-up
program is not in place.
The newsletter will contain age-appropriate learning tips,
developmental information and other useful information. If you have any
suggestions as to what to include, please forward them to the provincial
office.
Name the Newsletter Contest Winner
Congratulations to Bay St. George and Area Laubach Literacy
Council for the winning entry in the "Name the Newsletter Contest". Our
Books for Babies® newsletter is now titled "The Book Stork".
The council received a Books for Babies® tote bag and
two children's books for the winning submission!
Beverly Hulan, president of Bay St. George and Area had this to
say:
"Charmaine, I just received the Books for Babies®
tote bag and two children's books as winner of the name the Books for
Babies® newsletter contest!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
We'll use the kit somehow to the advantage of both our council
and the Books for Babies® program." Thank you to the Bay St. George
and Area Laubach Literacy Council.
New Materials
There are a couple of changes to the program materials yet
again. We are constantly trying to improve the program and reduce costs and
this is one method to do so.
We are designing a Books for Babies® calendar to use
in the initial package. One of the suggestions for improvement to the existing
calendar is to make it smaller so that parents can take it with them wherever
they go. Another suggestion is to make it more Books for Babies® -
focused.
In order to provide a calendar which is useful to all
participants, we request your input on possible changes. The creation of the
calendar begins in September, so get your suggestions in to the provincial
office as early as possible.
What's Happening In Your
Area? N.B. Letters submitted for this
column have been edited for clarity and brevity.
Gros Morne Literacy Council
Monday, June 11, Angela Welsh, local Books for
Babies® coordinator, along with the assistance of other council
members, hosted a workshop in Norris Point, on reading to young children.
Council members and dedicated parents, grandparents and caregivers participated
despite the beautiful weather.
The provincial coordinator conducted the presentation and
participants learned new techniques to help young children learn.
Southwest Books for Babies®
The Walk for Literacy, held on Saturday, June 9 in Port aux
Basques was a great success, realizing almost $900. The weather, although
uncooperative, did not prevent the eager participants from walking.
