On May 7, we are hosting our fourth annual Adult Spelling Bee Challenge at the Penticton Golf and Country Club. Proceeds from this fundraiser support literacy projects in the community such as The Red Shelf Readers at the Community Centre, McLaren Arena, the Food Bank, and other locations.
Vernon Writers Festival is being held April 11 to 14 and is comprised of local, and British Columbia writers who are dedicating their time and craft to bring this exciting event to the Okanagan. Presently, the festival boasts a local and BC author Book Fair, 10 workshops, blue pencil appointments and a social evening to end off the 4 day event.
In the South Okanagan this year, Family Literacy Day was extended for an entire week. Children and families took up the challenge to Unplug and Play, choosing what they would do differently each day of the week with the time they were unplugged. Fourteen elementary schools issued passports to each of their students. Participating agencies also provided passports for parents to join in.
Interactive English 2 is a new interactive ESL teaching resource available online free of charge to ESL providers and libraries. The resource is built around short stories and associated activities that are designed to develop reading, listening, vocabulary and cultural literacy skills for students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
