Four Great Years

This year marks the fourth year of the Northrop Frye International Literary Festival in Moncton. It also marks the third year that Laubach (Each One Teach One) and CASP (Community Academic Services Program) students have had the opportunity to participate in this great event through the Greater Moncton Literacy Advisory Board. As first time writers, their entries are judged by a panel whose interests include the importance of adult literacy in our region, and in Canada as a whole. This year we congratulate the following winners:

1st - Read to Freedom by Paulette LeBlanc - John Howard Society CASP, Moncton.
2nd - Why I Decided to Go Back to School by G. LeBlanc Chandler - John Howard Society CASP, Moncton
3rd - Dreams b
y Tanya Gallant - Seaside CASP, Shediac

Editor's Message: Once again I have the privilege of putting together another issue of the CASPer. It is a much different process now than it was in 1995, when the layout was a cut-and-paste effort, spread out on the pool table here at the Salisbury Boys & Girls Club. Today, through corporate generosity, we can publish a page at a time on the computer and see the results as they come out in colour on a printer. Inside this issue you will find many stories written by CASP students. Some will make you smile, some will bring a tear to your eye; regardless, you will enjoy the read. For some of our students, the process of writing a story is a challenge that few would have undertaken in the past. It is because of the Laubach Literacy Programs and the CASPs throughout New Brunswick that the challenge of writing (and reading) has changed from being unsurmountable to possible. If you know of someone who did not have the chance to finish their high school, and would like to, have them call 856-2241. If you know of someone who never had the chance to learn to read, have them call the same number. The Greater Moncton Literacy Council offers free, private, and confidential tutoring for adults. CASPs offer free adult upgrading from grade three to GED.
