Vancouver Community College Certificate Program in Family Literacy

Canada's first certificate program in family literacy at the college level is currently being offered at Vancouver Community College as a partnership between the Centre for Family Literacy, Continuing Studies Department of Vancouver Community College, 2010 Legacies Now Literacy Now, and Literacy B.C. The existing Foundational Training in Family Literacy manual is being used as the course content for this program, along with some of the new chapters that have been developed.

This certificate program is being offered as a 189 hour program that begins with the Introduction to Family Literacy. This is followed by six core courses, each comprised of 2-3 of the Foundations chapters, and a 30-hour practicum component. The class meets one evening a week plus one Saturday per course, from September 2007 through May of 2008. Following this pilot, we hope that other colleges in the country will be interested in developing similar family literacy certificate programs. For further information about this initiative, please contact Maureen Sanders at (780) 421-7323 or Maureen_Sanders@famlit.ca.
