What research is available to us now? Research in practice is readily available to the literacy field through internet, research journals, literacy texts written by academics and conversations with fellow practitioners. There is research available on the ininternet through RiPal, RaPAL and NALD. The Research
in Practice in Adult Literacy (RiPAL) website www.nald.ca/ripal/online.htm
links to a number of research documents including: The adult educators guide to practitioner research by S. Cokley. Adapting writing to read for adults by F. Begg. From practice to theory and back again by P. Steeves. Exploring tutors’ and student’s beliefs about reading and reading strategies by R. Still. Naming the magic: non-academic outcomes in basic literacy by E. Battell. What do adult literacy students think being literate is by A. Pheasey. The UK equivalent to RiPAL is RaPal which can be found at www.literacy.lancaster.ac.uk/rapal/rapal.htm. For research documents on the NALD website, go to www.nald.ca and click the links to Full Text Documents. Research in adult education is also available from the UNB Library system at this web address www.lib.unb.ca/. Like physicians and other professionals, adult educators must keep up-to-date on current practice. Take time to read research, reflect upon it and adapt it to your practice. |
