AlphaPlus Centre Makes Plans for Literacy in the Year 2000
The face of Canadian literacy changed recently, as both
AlphaCom and
Alpha Ontario
amalgamated to become the AlphaPlus Centre. The vision for this centre is to
create an "information gateway for resources on adult literacy and language
training in Ontario and beyond", according to Linda Monteith, Executive
Director of the centre.
The mandate of AlphaPlus is to provide the effective delivery of resources to the Anglophone, Francophone, Native and Deaf literacy programs in Ontario, as well as support through their electronic communications network.
The merger of the two services came about after years of users confusing the literacy services offered by AlphaCom, which were mainly electronic-based, and Alpha Ontario, which was primarily resource-based. The confusion was mainly due to the similarity in names and the specialized literacy services provided by both organizations. Since the two organizations offered complementary services for the literacy community, the Ministry of Education and Training, as part of its provincial program reform process, decided that it would be of greater benefit to users if the two services were combined.
The new organization will offer support for curriculum development, distance learning and applied research. It will continue to provide collection, reference and information services, run AlphaCom, the bilingual communications network, and provide support for professional development. It
will maintain field support for practitioners in the Francophone, Anglophone, Native and Deaf literacy communities, as well as providing technological support and trouble shooting for these groups.
By the year 2000, the AlphaPlus Centre expects to be the "information gateway" for accessible and relevant resources and technical help for adult literacy and language learning.
The merger will allow the centre to forge new partnerships and share information across Canada and internationally. Its vision is to become known for its outstanding resource collection, state of the art communication services, support for distance learning and its practical
