Lifetime Learning a Possibility as Interactive Television Comes to Canada in September

Participating in the process of lifelong learning will become easier this fall with the launch of Canadian Learning Television (CLT). This new specialty network will link Canadians with learning institutions and practitioners from all regions of the country, giving them access to credit courses and learning packages. CLT plans to use its credit based focus, partnerships with educational institutions and its link to job and skills upgrading to make it possible for Canadians to upgrade their skills, make a career change or to take advantage of the content for personal development. An independent survey showed that 80% of adult Canadians would like to improve their level of education, to update and upgrade their skills and knowledge. With these statistics, the CLT should have strong viewer support when it begins broadcasting in September.
Content will include programs for Basic Adult Learning to provide opportunities ranging from needs assessment to the GED program. Programming will also cover accreditation courses leading to a diploma, certificate or degree. Skills training will play an important role in programming content, especially in the area of computer, Internet and Web-based technology. There will also be general interest educational programs, which the CLT believes will enhance life and employment opportunities, while making learning stimulating, rewarding and fun. Another feature of the CLT is a resource centre that will respond to viewer and caller needs with up-to-date information and support services, including assessment and referral.
CLT will provide online education with authentic Canadian content, 24 hours a day and seven days a week. One of the highlights will be its daily national interactive Learning and Jobs series, the L&J News. It will cover topics such as trends, funding, government policies and other key issues related to the Canadian workplace.
