Steps to Employment Series

Steps to Employment is a series of three modules designed to integrate workplace orientation and language instruction for specific areas of the labour market. It provides workshop manuals for the field of computers, home health care and construction, with a learner’s and instructor’s section in each. The manuals target those with at least a basic proficiency in English who have some background or interest in these three areas, and provide the basic terminology and topics of interest related to each category. While the workshop is designed as a 5-day program, it can be used to accompany workplace modules or themes within a regular classroom setting, over a longer period of time. The information used is based on authentic situations and vocabulary, with reference to newspaper articles, workplace manuals, information gathered from employers and labour organizations, as well as government and business.

toolsSteps to Employment: Computers provides an overview of the current trends in employment, as well as future prospects in this field. It discusses the typical settings in respect to various jobs, and covers the area of self employment. It also provides information on the types of jobs available and the qualifications required. Topics also include workplace law and health and safety issues. Training and upgrading options, self-assessment and personal planning are all included in the student workshop manual. Each unit begins with a list of outcomes for the topics covered, with accompanying Web sites referenced where available, for locating additional information on the subject.

Steps to Employment: Construction covers typical occupations, the workplace, labour law and training and upgrading skills. The terminology is based on equipment and tools, common construction activities and health and safety issues.

Steps to Employment: Home Health Care discusses different jobs in home health care, including wages, responsibilities, training and future jobs in this field. Learners are shown how to look for jobs, what issues are involved and the laws related to health and home care. The vocabulary component covers the names of equipment commonly used and of health conditions, and general vocabulary related to body parts.

Although the modules were originally developed for language training programs for newcomers to Canada, this is an excellent series for workplace language training for adult workplace education programs as well. The modules relate to the workplace situation and labour laws of Ontario, but most of the information is common to the workplace in most of Canada, and this shouldn’t interfere with the use of the modules in the classroom.
