Steps to Employment Series Steps to Employment is a series of three modules designed to integrate workplace orientation and language instruction for specific areas of the labour market. It provides workshop manuals for the field of computers, home health care and construction, with a learners and instructors section in each. The manuals target those with at least a basic proficiency in English who have some background or interest in these three areas, and provide the basic terminology and topics of interest related to each category. While the workshop is designed as a 5-day program, it can be used to accompany workplace modules or themes within a regular classroom setting, over a longer period of time. The information used is based on authentic situations and vocabulary, with reference to newspaper articles, workplace manuals, information gathered from employers and labour organizations, as well as government and business.
Steps to Employment: Construction covers typical occupations, the workplace, labour law and training and upgrading skills. The terminology is based on equipment and tools, common construction activities and health and safety issues. Steps to Employment: Home Health Care discusses different jobs in home health care, including wages, responsibilities, training and future jobs in this field. Learners are shown how to look for jobs, what issues are involved and the laws related to health and home care. The vocabulary component covers the names of equipment commonly used and of health conditions, and general vocabulary related to body parts. Although the modules were originally developed for language
training programs for newcomers to Canada, this is an excellent series for
workplace language training for adult workplace education programs as well. The
modules relate to the workplace situation and labour laws of Ontario, but most
of the information is common to the workplace in most of Canada, and this
shouldnt interfere with the use of the modules in the classroom.
The Steps to Employment series was developed for Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Ontario Regional Settlement Directorate (ORLAC) by LCRT Consulting. It will be available on CD-ROM and available for downloading from the CIC Website at: http://cicnet.ci.gc.ca |
