Help for Statistics Generation, cont'd from page 1

Working womanLiteracy organizations report using a variety of software to track learner data. The users reporting the highest level of satisfaction with their current software are the programs that have developed their own custom applications. However, a number of programs reported using a custom application that was abandoned due to lack of ongoing technical support.

The survey respondents also told us what criteria were important for selecting information management software. These criteria were used to rate software that is used, or may be used, to manage learner data. Both general purpose software and literacy specific software were reviewed.

Each review contains a description of the software and a rating of the software against each criterion. Pricing information and links to vendors' websites are included. In addition, there is a listing of agencies that have offered to share the custom applications they have developed. So if you are considering developing your own Access database, this may be a good place to start.

A comprehensive final report, including the survey results and software ratings will be available online in April. Paper copies are available upon request.

So, if you:

  • are considering purchasing some software to help your program generate stats, or
  • are wondering about the results of our online survey, or
  • are curious how your current method of stats generation stacks up against the alternatives...

take a few minutes to drop by our site.

While you are there, please take a minute to fill out our feedback survey. It's very brief (only 8 multiple choice questions!) and it will help us evaluate our work and improve the site. We would appreciate any feedback.

Steps to Employment Update

Volume 3, Issue 3 of CONNECT contained a review of Steps to Employment, a series of manuals offering workplace orientation and language instruction for three different labour markets: construction, computers, and home health care. Steps to Employment was made possible with funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Ontario Region Settlement Directorate and with input from The Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation, Access to Professions and Trades Unit, and Human Resources Development Canada. The manuals can be downloaded at http://settlement.org/. They can be found by using the Site Search button. The manuals are also available through the AlphaPlus Centre library (1-800-788-1120)
