The Literacy Kit

For a reasonable $68 adults can now purchase The Literacy Kit, Robert Grimminck's latest resource for adult new readers. For several years now Robert Grimminck has drawn upon his own exercises as a literacy student to help him produce effective resources to assist youth and adults who are learning to read. The Literacy Kit is made up of five readers, an audio CD, an English grammar book and a word log computer program.

Each of the five readers focuses on a topic such as The Computer, Interesting Places, Sports, etc. These simple readers start with words and quickly progress to paragraphs. They are colourful and clearly laid out, but occasional fall into the trap of simplifying the information being provided along with the reading level.

The Follow & Read Audio CD contains audio for all five readers and makes this resource perfect for new readers who, for whatever reason, are unable to attend literacy classes. They can listen to the CD whenever and wherever they want. All that is required is a regular CD player or a computer with a CD drive.

The audio CD also contains a small software program, Writer’s Helper, that can be used to keep a personalized word log. Here students can keep a list of words they find particularly difficult to spell. Each word in the list can be identified with its phonetic spelling or a first language equivalent if English is the student’s second language. This simple program is very small in appearance so it could easily be viewed on the screen along with a word processing program. This part of The Literacy Kit can be freely copied and shared with others.

The Kit also contains a the User Friendly English book which acts as a simple grammar guide.
