WINDOWS TIPS: Selecting Many Items Using the SHIFT
and CTRL Keys
The next time you have several lessons saved on a disk
and you want to copy them onto your schools computers, instead of
dragging each file off the disk one by one try "shift-clicking".
Using the SHIFT key while you're clicking allows you to highlight several items
in a range.
- Hold the SHIFT key down with one hand while clicking
your mouse once on the first item.
- Continue to hold the SHIFT key but release the mouse
button.
- Move your mouse to the last item you want to include
and click once.
- All of the icons that are between the first and last
icon you selected will now be highlighted.
- Let go of the SHIFT key and now you are free to move
all of these selected icons as a unit.
If the items you want to highlight are not in a
continuous range, i.e., they are separated by other files, you can pick and
choose the items you want to highlight using the CNTRL key. All you have to do
is hold down the CNTRL key while you click on the items.
You can also select multiple items using the mouse by
drawing a box around the items.
- Click and hold the button on the mouse in the top
left corner of the area containing the items you want to highlight. Don't click
directly on any of the items.
- Drag down and across, creating a box around the
items.
- Let go of the button on the mouse.
