Wisdom Captured on CD-ROM

CD-ROM graphicThe American North Central Regional Educational Laboratory has created a wonderful resource for adult educators looking for ideas on how to successfully integrate technology into adult literacy instruction. The Captured Wisdom CD-ROM Library highlights seven technology-related projects developed by adult educators:  The Antarctica Project, The Mars Project, Home Countries, The Restaurant Problem, Intrepid Tales, Creating Family Histories and Presenting the Whole Package.  Each project used technology to enhanced instruction while providing students an opportunity to learn computer skills. The CD allows adult educators to view classroom videos of students participating in the projects. There is also an opportunity to hear the instructor answer specific questions about learners, instructional activities, project management, technology issues, products and assessments. Some of the practical questions answered include:

  • “Did students exhibit resistance to technology?”

  • “Do you teach computer skills explicitly or do students learn skills as they go along?”

Bridging the Gap Between Literacy & Technology

Bridging the Gap Between Literacy and Technology is the title of a two-part curriculum guide created by Samaritan House Training Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. The guide provides literacy practitioners in Manitoba and other parts of the country with tools to help them incorporate technology into a literacy curriculum.

The Educational Component of the guide is divided into four theme units: Ourselves, Humour, Employment and Memories. Each unit contains lesson plans that are cross-referenced with the third and fourth stages of Manitoba’s Certificate in Literacy and Learning. The lessons also contain suggestions for computer integration, assessment tools, and additional resources.

The Computer Component of the guide has been provided to support the computer integration ideas found in the Educational Component. In order to complete computer integration tasks such as creating a poster, students must possess the necessary computer skills.
