NAVIGATING THE WEB   BY DIANE MCCARGAR

Le guide du conducteur sur l’Internet

mv/guide/index-f.shtml

The New Brunswick Department of Transportation has made their Driver’s Handbook available online. The website http://www.gov.nb.ca/dot/mv/
handbook/index.shtml
allows you to read the handbook from beginning to end or jump to the sections that are of interest to you. Part 7: Highway Signs, which contains pictures of traffic signs along with their descriptions, could easily be incorporated into a reading activity for lower-level literacy students. For the most part this website is just a copy of the handbook but what makes the online version different is the interactive quizzes contained at the end of each section. Here you can practice answering sample multiple choice questions on the topics covered in each section. The computer provides you with immediate feedback on your answers.

Prepare Your Resume at Mazemaster http://www.mazemaster.on.ca

Preparing students for employment involves many steps but one that almost all literacy students find difficult is the preparation of a resume. Students often require one on one assistance as they collect background information and write their resumes. Add on top of that the requirement that resumes be professionally typed and this task becomes incredibly time consuming.

Word processing programs like Word now come with resume templates that attempt to assist people with the word processing of their resumes. Unfortunately these templates are often geared to professionals and require the user to have fairly good word processing skills. Commercial resume writing software is also available but again they tend to require the user to sort through lists of options before they find a suitable resume format for them. Online resume writing tools are now starting to emerge and Mazemaster is one such option.

Mazemaster is a website for youth employment that has come out of a partnership between the Toronto Catholic District School Board and Human Resource Development Canada. Their section on Job Search Techniques is currently under construction but already contains useful tools for creating cover letters, resumes and thank you letters. Three types of resume formats are included: chronological, functional and combination. The forms are simple and easy to use making this an accessible tool for most literacy students.
